December Steering Group Meeting

The Steering Group for the regeneration of the Queen Mother Sports Centre convened for the first time in December. Some of the project team behind the potential regeneration of the Queen Mother Sports Centre introduced themselves to the group, explaining their position and listening to initial feedback on the current facilities.

The group was made up of representatives from local schools, competetive swimming groups, water polo groups, local charities, local residents and more. They provided invaluable feedback on the current issues in the ageing sports centre, which included:

  • Lack of appropriate changing facilities for school children

  • Poor disabled access to the building

  • Poor disabled access within the building

  • Under-provision of disabled toilets/changing rooms

  • Swimming pool at a fixed depth

  • Staffing issues

  • Low levels of cleanliness/hygeine

The feedback was incredibly insightful and proactive, and with each issue a solution was suggested by the group.

The next meeting will take place in January, where the Steering Group will meet with technical members of the project team to gain a greater understanding of the constraints and possibilities in the potential new scheme.
